You’ve taken the big plunge and purchased your brand spanking new bike. You’ve even gone for some comfortable riding knicks and a jersey. Now graduate to clipless pedals and shoes!
“Clipless pedals” is probably the worst name devised for something that you clip in and out of to use. The explanation is that its name came about from the lack of traditional toe clips and straps on the pedals. The way they work is they have a spring released area that will accept a cleat which is attached to your shoe. Engage the cleat and you are one with the pedal.
Maximum efficiency is now yours to be had! It doesn’t seem like you can gain that much from such a simple device but the results will amaze you. It’s almost like you’ll gain a gear going uphill and the benefits on the flats are almost as much.
There are two basic types of pedal/shoe combinations: road and mountain. Road pedals use larger cleats which will not fit on shoes that you can walk in. Cycling Only with this option! These are the choice for you if you want to get the maximum output from your efforts.
Mountain bike pedals have smaller cleats which fit in the recessed areas of cycling shoes. You can walk in these shoes so they are perfect for mountain biking and general recreational riding. Amongst the various types of cycling shoes that will accept mountain bike cleats, you can opt for lighter weight fitness or touring shoes (or even sandals), recreational mountain bike shoes, or performance mountain bike shoes.
The main brands of shoes we carry in the shop are Shimano and Pearl Izumi. They have a great range, are great value and seem to fit a lot of feet! For pedals, our favourites are Shimano, Time and Look. All are highly regarded and best of all, replacement cleats are readily available for when yours wear out.
If you enjoy your riding, a pair of clipless pedals and shoes is a great investment. If you decide to go ahead we’ll set your bike up on a stationary training to let you get the feel for them. Nothing like a little confidence booster to get you going.
