Renegade Cycles/Cycle Masters Road Rides.

Due to a shortage of trained ride leaders and other commitments we have suspended our Saturday morning rides.  In their place we have been advised that many of the people who frequent our rides will carry on with informal rides that start from the shop but which are not affiliated with Renegade Cycles or Cycle Masters.  For more information please go to http://www.jamescheetham.net/Renegade/.

For those that prefer a structured ride with ride leaders please visit the Bike North website.  They are the local bicycle user group and they run rides that cater to all abilities.

We have retained information about our rides below to give you an indication of what to expect when you ride in a group.

Group Descriptions

Group 1: usually rides longer distances and averages approximately 28km/hour.

Group 2: focuses on improving riders’ fitness and 'bunch riding' techniques. They average 24-25km/hour.

Group 3: Develops fitness and ‘bunch riding’ techniques with an average speed of 20km/hour and with shorter distances covered than Group B. You should be comfortable doing 25k on the flat and higher on descents for at least 1.5 hrs. Group C is a good, social group to join if you have the fitness but need to develop group biking skills or would prefer a 2 hour ride at a slower average pace.

All groups enjoy a coffee in Lane Cove following the rides on the weeks when the shop BBQ isn't being held.

All participants must have covered the distances at a similar pace of their intended group prior to joining any RideSydneyTM rides. People wishing to ride with Group 1 must ride with Group 2 initially in order to demonstrate that their skills and fitness are up to the demands of a Group 1 ride. The group will continue at the speeds outlined above. If you are not up to covering the advertised speeds, you may be asked by the ride leader to leave the group until you can maintain the advertised speeds.

Rider Skills

We recently introduced some rider skill development sessions. An overview of these issues can be viewed at: Rider Skills Development

  • Australian approved helmet
  • Pump, spare tubes, tyre levers, tools, etc
  • Appropriate cycling clothing
  • 2 full water bottles
  • Money for coffee after the ride or emergencies
  • Mobile phone
  • Food, gels, etc.
  • Everyone needs to read the Rider Skills Development and sign a waiver prior to their first ride.

What type of equipment do I need?

Please ensure your bike has been recently serviced and is in proper working order.  Brakes and tyres should be in good condition.  Check your brake pads and cables regularly.  Tyres should be correctly inflated.  Ensure your handlebars, stem and quick release levers are secure.  Gears should shift smoothly and your drive train should not be overly worn or damaged.  Please also wear cycling gear that you can comfortably ride in for 2 hours or more.
