Five great reasons to ride to work
- It will put the Good back into G'Day! In fact, you'll have more great days than good days.
- You'll save more money to spend on what you want to do or buy.
- Your employer will love you: you'll be more productive at work.
- You can exercise while you commute: you'll save time.
- You'll be doing your bit to help the environment.
We would love to help you leave the car at home and discover the new, improved, invigorated you. Starting and ending your work day with a bike ride is a winner every day. You’ll feel refreshed and healthy. It doesn’t take the world to start commuting: a bike, a helmet, a job away from home, and a sense of adventure are all you need. You'll discover some great places to ride along the way.
Here are some tips to transform your working day. Talk to your employer about the feasibility of riding to work. Are there end-of-trip facilities including showers, storage for personal effects and a secure place for your bike? If not you still might be able to convince your employer on the merits of providing such facilities. Studies in the UK have found a return of $1.77 and $6.50 for every dollar spent on cycling facilities by employers. A more productive workforce, less demand on parking, healthier employees, and less absenteeism add dollars to the bottom line.
Did you know?
Figures from the 2001 census revealed that the number of people who ride to work and live within the Lane Cove Council area has increased 74% since 1996. North Sydney did even better at 91%. Interestingly, both councils have been active in providing on-road cycling facilities. Five other nearby councils without active cycling committees could only manage increases between 3% and 24%. The message to government is clear. Build cycleways and we will use them!
It might be stating the obvious, but before you undertake a commuting program, see your doctor.
Once you get the green light, plan your route. We can help you. The Cycling Promotion Fund also has an informative section on Commuting. If your employer is committed to providing cycling services then companies such as Cycle Masters (which has cycling programs and seminars) can liaise with your employer to give you the inside tips and confidence to cycle instead.
